First stage
Part 1: The first part contains episodes 1-13:- Act 1: The Ultimate Tofu Store Drift: High schooler Takumi Fujiwara is revealed as a secret driving prodigy who delivers tofu in a Toyota AE86. When the elite Akagi RedSuns challenge local racers to a race on Mount Akina, a mysterious "ghost" (Takumi) blows past Keisuke Takahashi.
- Act 2: Revenge! The Rumbling Turbo: Keisuke Takahashi vows to find the Eight-Six that defeated him. Meanwhile, Takumi’s best friend, Itsuki, gets duped into buying a slow AE85, thinking it is the superior AE86.
- Act 3: The Downhill Specialist Appears: The Akina Speedstars, led by Iketani, prepare to race the RedSuns. However, Iketani crashes in practice. Desperate, he asks Bunta (Takumi's dad) to race, but Takumi shows up instead.
- Act 4: Challenge!: The battle between Takumi’s Eight-Six and Keisuke’s RX-7 begins. Takumi reveals his unnatural mastery of the downhill, using unconventional techniques to keep pace, shocking the onlookers.
- Act 5: The End of the Battle: Takumi uses the "gutter hook" technique to overtake Keisuke on the final turn, winning the race and gaining attention in the street racing world.
- Act 6: A New Challenger: Takeshi Nakazato, leader of the Myogi NightKids, arrives on Akina to challenge the winner of the last race, looking to test his powerful Nissan Skyline GT-R against the 86.
- Act 7: Race to the Finish: The race against Nakazato begins. Takumi struggles initially but realizes he can win by pushing his tires to the limit, causing Nakazato to overthink his cornering.
- Act 8: Calling Cards: After beating the GT-R, Takumi becomes a target. Shingo Shoji, a dangerous NightKids member, challenges Takumi by forcing a "Duct Tape Deathmatch" (racing with one hand taped to the wheel).
- Act 9: The Devil of Akina: Shingo tries to force a crash with Itsuki, prompting Takumi to accept the dangerous duel to stop him.
- Act 10: Temptation!: As Takumi gains fame, he focuses more on racing. The story explores his developing relationship with classmate Natsuki Mogi.
- Act 11: Decisive Battle!: The dangerous Duct Tape Deathmatch against Shingo starts. Despite the handicap, Takumi manages to control the car by drifting.
- Act 12: The FR Killer: The race against Shingo intensifies. Shingo keeps ramming the Eight-Six, but Takumi’s superior skills allow him to win despite the damage.
- Act 13: Itsuki’s First Date: Following the intense duel, this episode focuses on comic relief with Itsuki’s date, while setting up future challenges from other teams.
- Act 14: Evolving Drift (Shingo Shoji Arc):Takumi accepts a "Duct Tape Death Match" against Shingo Shoji, where their right hands are taped to the steering wheel, reducing control. Shingo uses dirty tactics, ramming Takumi from behind, causing the 86 to spin 360 degrees. Despite this, Takumi keeps control and accelerates faster than ever, enraged.
- Act 15: Takumi's Fury (Shingo Shoji Arc Conclusion): A furious Takumi effortlessly keeps up with Shingo on the dangerous Mt. Akina downhill. When Shingo attempts another dirty bump, Takumi avoids it, causing Shingo to crash his EG6 into the guardrail, ending the race and securing another win for Takumi.
- Act 16: The Angel of Usui: Iketani meets Mako Sato, a fast female driver from Mt. Usui who drives a Sil-Eighty. While they spend time together, Mako's driving partner, Sayuki, challenges the Akina SpeedStars to a race, leading to a date/race offer that Iketani finds complicated due to his growing feelings.
- Act 17: Sudden-Death Deathmatch (Usui Pass)
- Takumi goes to Usui Pass to face Mako and Sayuki in their Sil-Eighty. It is a new, unfamiliar course for Takumi. He initially struggles to read the road but begins to match Mako’s incredible speed in the second half of the course.
- Act 18: Hot Winds! Furious Driving! Usui Pass (Usui Pass Conclusion)
- The battle reaches the treacherous C-121 corner. Mako takes a radical line, but Takumi, using a new technique learned from watching them, executes a specialized drift to overtake her in the most dangerous spot, winning the race.
- Act 19: Super Drift
- The Emperor team, driving Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions, arrives in Gunma, easily defeating local teams. Their leader, Kyoichi Sudo, looks down on Takumi's AE86. Meanwhile, Natsuki's relationship with her "Papa" is revealed to Takumi, devastating him.
- Act 20: The Miscalculated Warning
- Takumi is distracted by his personal issues with Natsuki. He is challenged by Seiji Iwaki from Emperor. Because of his emotional state and anger, Takumi drives with immense, uncontrolled speed, forcing Seiji to lose his nerve and crash.
- Act 21: The Strongest Challenge
- Kyoichi Sudo, unimpressed by Seiji's loss, challenges Takumi on Akina. Takumi's engine, already strained, cannot handle his aggressive driving style against a superior car, resulting in the engine blowing up mid-race.
- Act 22: The Decisive Battle
- The 86 is out of commission. Bunta realizes that to make Takumi a better driver, the car needs more power. Meanwhile, Ryosuke Takahashi announces his intention to fight Kyoichi Sudo on Akagi, setting the stage for a clash of philosophies.
- Act 23: The New Engine
- Bunta installs a racing-spec engine (4A-GE 20-valve) into the 86, giving it a massive power boost. Takumi learns to handle the increased acceleration. Wataru Akiyama, another 86 driver, arrives in Gunma looking for a challenge.
- Act 24: Dangerous Match
- Takumi battles Wataru Akiyama on a dangerous, unfamiliar mountain pass in the rain. The race is a clash of two similar cars, with Wataru using the superior power of his turbo-charged 86.
- Act 25: Last Battle!
- The battle against Wataru continues, with both drivers pushing their cars to the limit. Takumi manages to utilize the new engine's capabilities to barely edge out Wataru, marking a massive evolution in his driving skill.
- Act 26: New Downhill Legend
- The final battle: Takumi vs. Ryosuke Takahashi. Ryosuke, the "White Comet of Akagi," uses superior tactical knowledge to dominate early. However, Takumi’s unconventional driving and newfound power allow him to overtake Ryosuke on the final turn, winning the race and cementing his reputation as the new legend of the downhill.
